How to create a skincare routine and order of application

August 29th, 2023 by

When it comes to creating a skincare routine, it is important to identify what is your skincare goal and what potential concerns you want to address are, and secondly to align that with your skin type.

Once you have that clear and defined, then you can start finding products with the respective active ingredients needed to achieve that goal. After which, you can filter products according to the order of application which will guide how and when you use each type of product that you have chosen.

It is important to know which ingredients are suited for each concern. Our advice would be to create a routine that is simple but effective, more products don’t necessarily mean better results. And always make sure to add antioxidants!

This is honestly one of the best things you can do to your skin because they work to protect your skin from various free radical damage. They are great ingredients for healthier and brighter skin. We also recommend ensuring you are using skin-replenishing ingredients to support skin barrier health, because if your skin barrier is damaged then it could cause many issues such as acne, dull skin, and aggravate signs of aging.

Common antioxidants to incorporate

  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3)
  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)
  • Vitamin E
  • Retinol (vitamin A)
  • Green tea

Common skin-replenishing ingredients to incorporate

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Ceramides
  • Glycerin
  • Fatty acids
  • Cholesterol

Now, how to apply each product of a skincare routine.

This works on 3 fundamental principles

  • Cleanse
  • Treat
  • Protect

Cleanse

This is the first step of any routine where you use a cleanser to remove any excess oil, dirt, impurities, makeup, and sunscreen. Cleanse twice a day, morning, and evening.

Treat

This is a broad category, so many types of products can be used here. This is where you can get creative. This step includes using toners, serums, spot treatments, etc. There is a step where you should be incorporating antioxidants. Depending on your skincare goals, you can use products accordingly. With this step in your skincare routine, always make sure that the order in which you apply the different types of products mentioned earlier goes from lightest to thickest. A toner would go first, then a serum, and then a spot treatment, etc. And be sure to check the consistency of each of your serums to know which ones go first.
Ultimately this step is where you need to be purposeful with your actives to successfully address your specific skincare goals and concerns.

Protect

This step includes using a moisturizer and sunscreen. A moisturizer is one of the most important products to use, because neglecting moisturizing can lead to dry skin which leads to many other skin issues such as acne (YES) and makes your skin more prone to fine lines and wrinkles and contributes to duller and less healthy skin. A moisturizer helps to prevent trans-epidermal water loss, which is intense dehydration but also moisturized skin contributes to healthier and more radiant skin, so be sure to look for a moisturizer with skin-replenishing ingredients and softening ingredients to achieve soft and smooth skin.
Finally, a sunscreen. The most important product you could use. A sunscreen will not just protect you from the potential risk of skin cancer but applying sunscreen every day is the number 1 anti-aging advice, honestly. Also, many sunscreens have awesome beneficial ingredients such as niacinamide that are helpful for acne, moisturizing, and anti-aging concerns.

Ice for the skin?

August 29th, 2023 by

So…, what’s the deal with people putting ice on their skin? Many people claim that putting ice on your skin can solve and address so many skincare problems such as reducing oily skin, clearing acne, helping with anti-aging, helping to reduce puffiness, and helping you to achieve glowing skin. Are these claims valid? Well besides depuffing a bit and helping with redness, there is nothing else, I mean ice has some benefits that can be helpful for injuries but in terms of long-term benefits to the skin, unfortunately, many people will be disappointed. And be super careful to not keep ice on your skin for too long because it can have some major damaging effects.

How to wash your face

August 29th, 2023 by

When it comes to washing your skin, it seems like a simple issue but can be complicated if done incorrectly. When cleansing, your cleanser shouldn’t cause your skin to feel dry, or tight, or leave your skin feeling sensitive.

To correctly wash your face, follow these steps;

    1. Use lukewarm water to wet your face.
    2. Use about 1/3 of your index finger length of product.
    3. Rub your hands together and apply the cleanser evenly to your skin.
    4. Massage cleanser in a gentle manner in a circular motion, do this for about 30 seconds and if you are using an active ingredient for acne, do this for about 2 minutes.
    5. Then rinse thoroughly ensuring that no product remains on the skin, be sure to check the side of your face and wash it off as it is an area that some neglect.
    6. Pat dry with a clean face cloth.

A great tip for cleansing, is when patting your skin dry, use a separate washcloth and keep it dry.

Face masks

August 29th, 2023 by

Face masks can be a great way to enhance and provide beneficial support to your skincare routine. However, finding the right face mask and types of face masks that are effective is critical. First, you must identify your skin type to choose the right face mask to address your concerns.

For oily/acne-prone skin

Use clay marks, these masks are great for decongesting and helping to unclog pores. With any clay mask, be sure to look for ones with soothing and emollient ingredients to avoid excessive drying.

What about sheet masks?

Unfortunately, sheet masks do not have any research to show that they do anything for your skin and are more of a gimmick concerning addressing major skincare concerns. They can, however, help to hydrate the skin. be sure if you are using a sheet mask that it does not contain fragrances.

Slugging

August 29th, 2023 by

Slugging has become a viral trend, and many people claim it is the secret to younger-looking skin.

Slugging is essentially using an occlusive ingredient as your last step in your routine which would be applied after using your regular moisturizer. A popular occlusive ingredient and one we would recommend is petrolatum jelly. Slugging using an occlusive ingredient like petrolatum jelly is used to create a trap that seals in moisture and prevents any type of water loss to help hydrate your skin, it is trapping and sealing in all your skincare products that have already been applied which could according to some expert advice, enhance the ingredients and products to work better yet we’d caution sticking to that.

Mainly it will seal and trap in your moisturizer to help seal in more moisture while also hydrating your skin. We recommend petrolatum jelly because it is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog your pores, making it safe for oily/acne-prone skin.

Slugging is a great trend to try in the winter and according to many who have tried this trend, it has helped their skin to achieve that glow look everyone is after.

Black dots on the nose? All you need to know about sebaceous filaments

August 3rd, 2023 by

Many people deal with little black dots on the nose and often turn to pore strips to get rid of them, but as we have come to know, pore strips are not good for the skin and can be quite irritating to the skin particularly if used frequently.

So, before we talk about how to get rid of them, firstly what are they? Sebaceous filaments are just a build-up of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. So how do you get rid of them? You need to build a skincare routine with targeted ingredients.

The first ingredient is salicylic acid, which is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which is oil soluble meaning it can get into the pores and unclog all the build-up of dead skin cells and help to dissolve the oil.

The second is retinol, retinol improves skin cell turnover which helps to unclog pores and helps to decrease oil production.

And third and finally, would be niacinamide which helps to decrease and control oil production.
