The Truth - Types of sunscreen, chemical vs mineral - 2

Types of sunscreens, chemical and mineral.

There are two types of sunscreens, namely, chemical and mineral. There has been much debate around both these types of sunscreens. So, which one is better?

Firstly, both types of sunscreens are as effective, one is not more effective against the sun in comparison to the other. Yet, both are formulated with different active UV filters.

Mineral sunscreens are formulated with inorganic filters that reflect sunlight. They create a barrier that then reflects the UV light off your skin, the UV filters essentially sit on top of the skin and block and reflect the UV rays. Mineral sunscreens are recommended for people with sensitive skin and acne-prone skin because often they are formulated with the active UV filter zinc oxide which can help with acne.

Chemical sunscreens are formulated with organic filters that absorb the UV light; they essentially absorb UV rays like a sponge.

As always, we recommend that whatever sunscreen you use, regardless whether it is mineral or chemical, it must be non-comedogenic and work for you, depending on your skin type and the skincare concern you might want to address, you can choose a sunscreen accordingly.
